Should I be choosing "silage" seed or "commercial" seed in my silage Plans?

Overview:

Because corn varieties can be harvested for grain, silage, earlage, or snaplage, you sometimes need flexibility in what corn varieties you plant versus what you harvest. Traction Enterprise helps accommodate these uncertainties in corn production.

Requirements:

  • Make sure you've already worked with your CSM and/or Support in setting up your Crops.
  • Setup your seed Inputs.

Answer:

In Traction Enterprise, corn varieties are classified as "Commercial Corn" (predominantly for grain) and "Silage Corn" (predominantly for silage). "Sweet Corn" varieties are also available for market growers.

While setting up seed, if you are searching for a variety of corn to be used for silage and you do not see it, it may be listed as a Commercial Corn variety.

For planting and harvest, both Commercial and Silage varieties can be harvested as any corn harvest product; that is, Silage Corn can be harvested for grain and Commercial Corn can be harvested for silage.

Take for example the corn variety "P0448HR." This is listed as a Silage Corn variety by the manufacturer and it is recommended for silage use; however, this variety can be harvested for grain in Traction Enterprise Business records.

Farms that grow corn for grain or silage could use both crop types (Commercial Corn and Silage Corn) in Traction Enterprise; however, if you only grow Grain Corn, there is no advantage to having Silage Corn enabled in your account.

Many Traction Enterprise Business customers follow the best practice of setting up their corn varieties exclusively as Commercial Corn, unless they know 100% of their crop will be harvested for silage. In this instance, having the additional crop type (Silage Corn) enabled can help to filter certain reports.
