How is shrink calculated?

Overview:

Traction Enterprise calculates two types of shrink: grain shrink and forage shrink. To calculate grain shrink, Traction Enterprise uses the Target Moisture and Shrink Factor. To calculate forage shrink, Traction Enterprise uses Target Moisture.

Requirements:

Target Moisture and Shrink need specified in your Crop Settings.

Process:

Calculating grain shrink

For any harvested or hauled load of crop, if the Actual Moisture is less than Target Moisture then no adjustment is made to the Final Quantity. Your Final Quantity will be the same as your Transfer Quantity.

If Actual Moisture is greater than Target Moisture then Traction Enterprise calculates:

  1. (Actual Moisture - Target Moisture) x Shrink Factor = Shrink%
  2. (Transfer Quantity lbs / bushels per lb conversion) x (100% - Shrink%) = Final Quantity

Example:

Here is a Hauling Record of commercial corn grain when Actual Moisture is greater than Target Moisture:

  1. (16.20% - 15.00%) x 1.20 = 1.44%
  2. (66844 lbs / 56 lbs/bu) x (100% - 1.44%) = 1176.45 Dry Bushels

Calculating forage shrink

The final quantity depends on whether the Actual Moisture is less than or greater than your Target Moisture:

If Actual Moisture is less than Target Moisture then no adjustment is made to the final weight. The Final Quantity will be the same as the Transfer Quantity.

If Actual Moisture is greater than Target Moisture then:

  • (1 -  Actual Moisture) / (1 - Target Moisture) = Moisture loss percentage
  • Moisture loss percentage  x Transfer Quantity = Final Quantity

Example:

Here is a Hauling Record of Alfalfa Bales when Actual Moisture is greater than Target Moisture.

  • (1 - 0.7) / (1 - 0.65) = 0.8571
  • (75,000 lbs / 2000 lbs/ton) x (0.8571) = 19.29 tons
