How do I track Seed Varieties with Seed Treatments?

Overview

Every year, you are faced with a multitude of options for selecting seeds to use on your operation. Whether that seed is treated, untreated, self-treated, or factory-treated, Traction Enterprise Business can help you manage the input and the associated financials.

In terms of treated seed, this article walks you through how to manage the following situations:

  • Seed that is treated by your Supplier (treated before arriving on your farm)
  • Seed that is self-treated (treated on farm)

Requirements

  • Create Seed and Chemical Inputs setup under Setup>Inputs.

Answer

Supplier Treated Seed

With Supplier treated seed, we assume you are not interested in tracking the input use associated with the seed, however you are interested in tracking the cost associated with the treatment.

Option 1

Add the cost of seed treatment to your Planned Seed Cost via Setup>Inputs.

If you choose this method, you will also want to add the cost of seed treatment to your Input Deliveries for your Actual Seed Cost.

Option 2

  1. Navigate to Operations>Plans>Seed Plans, to assign seed varieties to the relevant boundaries.
  2. Next, we will setup a Financial account to capture the cost of the seed treatment.  Go to Setup>Financial Accounts.
  3. Create your new Financial Account:
    • Name the Account something that helps you identify Seed Treatment
    • Choose whether you want to Allocate to Tasks or Plans
    • Fixed or Variable Cost depending on how you were billed from your supplier
    • Default rate per acre

  4. Once complete, click Save or Save & Allocate, if you are ready to assign this financial account to your boundaries now.

Self-Treated Seed

With self-treated seed, we assume you are interested in tracking the input use associated with self-treating your seed and the relevant cost.

To track input usage:

  1. Create a Custom Input for your Seed Treatment in Setup>Inputs.
  2. Choose the Chemical tab.
  3. Start typing your new Input and select Add Custom Input.
  4. Enter the chemical details:
    • Input Name
    • Category (other is recommended for seed treatment)
    • Default Rate
    • Purchase Unit
    • Cost
    • If treatments will be combined, you will want to setup a Tank Mix.
  5. From the Seed Plans page, assign seed to relevant boundaries.
  6. On Task Manager, select the appropriate Planting Tasks.
  7. Add the Seed Treatment or Mix to select tasks.

As long as the rate per acre is correct, Traction Enterprise can tell you how much was applied and the cost associated with that input.
